Subculture responds to 'Goth Loner' accusations... →
For the benefit of Blogging Goth readers who aren’t following the WordPress version of the blog, here’s a link to the latest article on the Lanza shooting in the US, and critically - the response of some elements of the British media. The response has been heartening and may go some way in turning the tide of bad reporting and bad representation of Goth in the media. If you enjoy the...

theskysgoneout: A must read. I was surprised they don’t mention the fact that two of the best Goth/Darkwave singers of the present era, Tobi O’Kandi of O Children, and Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum, are of African heritage. Great article here. I’ve always kept in mind that Goth simply doesn’t feature a large proportion of non-Caucasians, and fretted over the fact that outsiders...

Going Underground? Academia and Goth Meet Again →
Once again, Goth is under the academic microscope - this time at Northumbria University. Their upcoming symposium, to be held this Friday, features a keynote session with Dr Catherine Spooner who is a highly prolific author on Gothic culture and appears to be shepherding an entire coterie of budding Doctors of Goth, which sounds both ludicrous and awesome. We’ve touched on academic study of...

Leon Steelgrave - More Stories about Drugs, Sex...
Usually, author’s pictures aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Who cares what the writer looks like? It’s the look of his words you’re more interested in, right? Revise that opinion then, because Leon Steelgrave’s battle-scarred back is the lining to this slim and sinful series of short stories. Within, you will travel from Scotland’s roughest...

VICE Magazine - A Big Night Out with...London's... →
A hip and ironic online magazine sends a journalist and photographer to Slimelight - and this is his review. The comments section is predictably frothing up as people clash over whether or not it’s amusing, with some people even deploying the Bacup attack as some kind of justification for not laying into the scene. For what it’s worth, I think it’s an entertaining read - but it...

Sentencing for Bury attackers
With thanks to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation who have begun circulating the news that sentencing has been handed down to the two men found guilty of assaulting two Goths in Bury, Manchester. The case has been extensively covered by the Daily Mail, but we strive to offer alternatives to visiting the Daily Mail’s website. The Telegraph also has the disturbing video of the assault actually...

Gothic Valley Woman's Institute
Lovely little article about “growing up” (sarcastic tones, of course) and moving out of Camden to join the first all-Goth WI club. It’s sparking a lot of interest around The Blogging Goth’s domain in deepest darkest Leeds - should it come to pass, we look forward to posting a link to the People’s Republic of West Yorkshire’s very own WI chapter!

Two in Court for pre-sentencing after Assault on...
Currently the leading British national carrying the story is the Daily Mail, but I can understand certainly anyone who doesn’t want to give that website any traffic. For your information, here is the Manchester Evening News reporting the story, and we encourage people to support their regional papers. As I said on my Facebook page - don’t ask me why I don’t “dress...

Greetings readers, and sincerest apologies for the break in transmission. I’ve now completed my industrial placement and I’m keen to get back into my own obligations, including The Blogging Goth and Dark Arches, my student radio show. I broadcast every Tuesday from 9pm on Leeds Student Radio, and I’ll occasionally discuss Goth-centric issues. Last Tuesday, I spoke briefly about...

Assault on two Goths in Bury →
Some further developments following our last update, two men have been arrested in connection with this assault. Contacting the Magistrates, it appears that Gareth Farrar has been referred to the Crown Court on these charges, for a hearing in February next year. We’ll communicate an update on Kelsall once the news becomes available.

An opportunistic attack in Bury has injured a couple of commuting Goths in a worryingly similar manner to the murder of Sophie Lancaster back in 2007. The attack itself occurred on October 4th but news stories are only just making it out now. Hopefully, someone will recognise the cuplrits and come forward with information. Please forward the story.

The Dark Wash Cycle - Old News about Old Goths →
The Guardian has dipped its toes into our pool again, with an article on Dr Paul Hodkinson’s research into Goths - he’s been re-interviewing people he first spoke to in the late 90s and finding out about how they combine their careers and the culture. The article is still laced with the mild surprise that people remain involved in Goth after their teens and early twenties - and you can...

"Hug a Goth" Day - August 24th
Over 40,000 people have signed up to a Facebook event encouraging them to Hug a Goth today. Twitter has naturally taken to it with its usual mix of heartfelt support and wry commentary, but there is a much more sombre reason for this pre-planned expression of affection. Four years ago today, Sophie Lancaster - a 20-year-old resident of Bacup, Lancashire - and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, were...
